Thank you, God, for this wonderful gift – Oxford Summer Theology School 2024

During the first two weeks of August, I attended the University of Oxford’s Summer Theology School—living in residence at the incomparable Christ Church College. Our small collection of students were in class all day long, and we ate our meals in the famous dining hall with roots going back to King Henry VIII. Day after day, I never stopped being amazed that Christ Church was my (temporary) home. Each morning and evening I had a special place on campus where I would walk and pray, during which I had many incredible moments with the Lord.

My courses included in-depth study and discussion on biblical approaches to beauty and creativity in art, architecture, literature, and images—from the ancient world all the way to AI and NFTs. I also completed a course on creativity in peace-making and peace-building during which we were led by one the UK’s most celebrated leaders in these areas (see picture below). We talked about the role of the Christians in peace-building in from South Africa to Israel/Palestine to the US and the UK and many other places. I literally have hundreds of pages of notes and I can say with confidence that not one moment was wasted during my time at the university.

Rev. Dr. Liz Carmichael, MBE—the MBE ribbon/medal she is wearing was given to her by Queen Elizabeth and (at the time) Prince Charles for her years of peace building work in South Africa in the 1990s during and after the Apartheid era.

Truthfully, though, there is no way I could put into words what the last two weeks held for me. For the last few days of my time there I found myself simply saying over and over, “Thank you, God, for this wonderful gift.” I’ve never been more thankful for my wonderful wife and family. And I’ve never been more thankful for my church family. Without our church and the wonderful staff with whom I serve, this experience would not have been possible. I pray the many gifts I received during my time at Oxford will be multiplied blessings I can share with all of you.

  1. Thank you for sharing this amazing experience. I am excited to hear more as you minister to us each week. May God continue to bless you and your precious family. Anna

  2. Eric, I have been there, though not for a summer program. It is indeed an inspiring and humbling place. When you return, I would love to have coffee when you might have a moment. It seems the world is not at all a peaceful place these days and I am trying to find my way. I am @ FBC Tulsa, a good place, with Deron, a good man, but would like your thoughts.

    All God’s Best to You,

    Mark Tate

  3. Eric, this looks/sounds like a wonderful experience. I was wondering if you had any other specific advice/comments about the program, as I am considering it as an official bridge into theology (from Law). Anything you can add would be helpful. Your blog was already very insightful!
